Mouthguards and Sports Injuries

While adequate padding can provide protection while playing contact sports, don’t forget the importance of safeguarding your mouth and teeth. At Vision Dental, we offer custom-fitted mouthguards that provide superior protection.

What About Over-the-Counter Types?

Unfortunately, most children and adolescents aren’t wearing custom mouthguards but over-the-counter ones that don’t adapt or fit the teeth or jaws as they should. A mouthguard always needs to fit snugly to be effective. Some athletes don’t wear a guard at all!

Protection Against Concussion

Many people don’t realise that wearing a mouthguard can help to prevent a concussion. That’s because if an athlete sustains a blow to the lower jaw and it slams up against the upper jaw, the skull can be affected in the form of a concussion. A custom-fitted mouthguard, however, acts like a car bumper in that it cushions the mouth, preventing concussion injury.

Handling a Knocked-Out Tooth

If you have a loose or lost tooth due to a mouth injury, the most critical thing you can do is get to a dentist within half an hour if possible. That’s because any time after that the tissue surrounding the tooth starts to deteriorate. So time is of the essence. Many people think that a tooth can’t be replanted, so they don’t attempt to find the lost tooth.

If you find that lost tooth, just give it a bit of a rinse and wash to get rid of any dirt and mud. Don’t scrub too hard or you could remove valuable tissue to help replant it. Then, until you can get into the office, store the tooth in your mouth or a container of milk. Doing so buys critical time. Then, we use a flexible wire to hold the tooth in place. It needs to stay in place for 1-2 weeks.

Whether you have a knocked-out tooth, tooth fracture or other dental emergency, we keep slots open each day to accommodate such emergencies. Ring us straightaway if you need immediate care.
