Helping You Sleep Better

At Vision Dental, our Menai family dentist has been helping sleep apnoea sufferers enjoy better sleep without the need for bulky CPAP equipment.

How Do You Know if You Have Sleep Apnoea?

Dentist Dr Stephen Suster works with an ear, nose and throat specialist to perform an examination to assess the anatomy of your upper airway. If a sleep study is necessary, you may be able to have it completed in the comfort of your own home. X-rays may also be necessary. Removal of the tonsils and adenoids are sometimes recommended, if this has not already been done. Finally, we create a custom oral appliance to help you keep your airway open when you lie down.

Most people see results as quickly as the first night of wearing their oral sleep appliance.

Causes of Sleep Apnoea

Some types of sleeping disorders such as sleep apnoea and snoring are due to a collapse of soft tissues that block the airway. This prevents air from flowing and many people are completely unaware that they go long periods without breathing as they sleep.

The narrowing of the throat and upper airway can sometimes be corrected by using a custom-made oral appliance. This piece draws the jaw forward and prevents the soft tissues at the back of the throat from closing together.

As a result, it’s possible to manage side-effects of sleep apnoea, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Daytime sleepiness and headaches
  • Poor memory, irritability and depression
  • Low energy levels
  • Bruxism, clenching and grinding of the teeth
