Do You Have to Use a Preferred Provider? What Your Health Fund Means for Your Choices

woman and man taking notesIf you’ve been searching for a dentist in the Menai area, you may have noticed that many clinics are listed as “preferred providers” for certain health funds. This can make it seem like you need to choose one of these clinics to use your benefits, but that is not the case.

What “Preferred Provider” Means

A preferred provider is simply a dental clinic that has a commercial agreement with a health fund. In some cases, the clinic agrees to set fees for certain services, and the fund may promote those clinics to its members.
You are not restricted to these providers. You can choose any registered dentist in Australia and still claim eligible benefits through your health fund.

You Can Still Claim Your Benefits

Visiting a non-preferred clinic does not mean you miss out on claiming. Vision Dental offers HICAPS, allowing you to claim on the spot at your appointment. The Children’s Dental Benefits Scheme is also accepted here for eligible patients.

A Thought From Dr Stephen Suster (Dentist)

I’ve always believed that great dental care starts with taking the time to truly understand each patient. When you have the opportunity to focus on individual needs, you can support early detection, explain options clearly, and help make each visit as comfortable as possible.

Cost Is Only One Factor

Preferred provider arrangements may influence fees for certain services. However, the difference in out-of-pocket costs between clinics is often smaller than many people expect, depending on your level of cover.
For many patients, factors such as comfort, communication, and confidence in their care also play an important role when choosing a dentist.

What to Expect

Our practice focuses on personalised care, with time set aside for discussion, examination, and clear explanations. Appointments are structured to support continuity and a thorough understanding of your oral health.
The clinic uses modern technology to assist with assessment and planning, including 3D imaging, cavity detection tools, dental lasers, and systems designed to support a more comfortable experience.

You Have the Freedom to Choose

Preferred provider status reflects an agreement between a clinic and a health fund. It does not determine which dentist is right for you. Choosing a dentist based on your preferences, comfort, and the kind of care you value can make a meaningful difference in your overall experience.
If you’re looking for a team that takes the time to understand your needs and support you in making informed decisions, Vision Dental is here to help.
