Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialised area of dentistry which deals with the alignment of the teeth and the jaws.  An orthodontic problem is known as a “malocclusion” which means that the teeth are crooked or do not fit together correctly.

Modern Orthodontics, however, goes beyond simply focusing on the teeth and the bite.  The aim nowadays is to have a beautiful, full smile with balanced facial profile not just straight teeth.  To achieve this it is sometimes necessary to undergo some orthopaedic treatment in a growing individual.  In simple terms orthopaedics involves changing the size, shape and relationship of the bones of the face and jaws with a “functional” appliance.
