Treating wisdom teeth problems

Wisdom teeth are your very back molars. They will usually erupt in your late teens.  There are many problems that can be associated with wisdom teeth.

Infection
As your wisdom teeth begin to erupt from the gum a flap of tissue can form. Food may collect under this flap and bacteria can cause infection and a painful swelling. If this occurs, antibiotic medication may be required.

Crowding
Sometimes your wisdom teeth do not have room to come through. This can cause your other teeth to move out of position and out of alignment. And, may mean that teeth need to be removed.

Decay
Wisdom teeth are located at the back of your jaw.  This means that it can be very difficult to keep this area clean and to prevent decay. Also, if teeth are impacted there is a possibility of decay forming in the wisdom tooth and the tooth in front.

Cysts
A growth sack surrounds developing wisdom teeth. This may remain when the teeth are impacted.  In rare instances, if the cyst is not treated, a tumour may develop and more extensive removal procedures may be required .

We take a panoramic digital radiograph (OPG), to detect the position of your wisdom teeth. This shows us the teeth and root placement within minutes. Using these images, we can diagnose and treat any problems.

Wisdom teeth can now be removed at our practice. We have a visiting surgeon who specialises in wisdom teeth removal.  This means that you no longer need to travel into the city to see a specialist.

We have a full range of relaxation systems to allow you to manage your concerns and any discomfort you may be experiencing. These include Sleep Dentistry, which is performed by a visiting anaesthetist.
